Overview
Commissioned by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum for their Public Art Program, the only US art museum with an ongoing program to create and maintain public art. The resulting mural references the rich architectural history, endemic flora, and recent renewal in the city of Buffalo, New York. The mural measures approximately 35 x 65 feet, painted with aerosol and latex paint.
Goals
This work is part of an ongoing citywide public art program funded and maintained by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum with the goals of bringing a rich and diverse collection of murals to the city in order to democratize access to art in various communities around the city.
Process
The mural site was selected by the museum's public art coordinators before I was asked to create a design. Next, I visited the city to gather research and photo references of notable architectural elements including the stained glass domed ceiling from the City Hall Chambers and original caryatid sculptures from the Museum's original building facade. Once the design was approved by all local stakeholders, the murals was then painted over 8 days.
