Overview
This 20 square foot piece is an expression of my experience with my stroke and my drive to continue creating art.
Goals
The piece was created so that I might share my experience with others in my position. I created it privately but want it to be in the public eye as much as possible.
Process
In 2011 I had a stroke. After I got out of the hospital, I could not talk or eat; but I needed art. I laid down on a 4 x 5 ft. canvas on the floor and friends traced my silhouette. Then they traced my husband's silhouette. I finished this painting in Sharpies over the next four months. The first things I painted were my husband’s hands; those loving hands that I was so thankful for. My body is mostly a blend of faces; perhaps my ancestors? The sky is mostly the names of friends and family. The landscape is graph paper with mountains suggested in the background.
