Overview
Healing, honoring, caring memorializing and celebrating the lives of lost loved ones. SPIRIT OF CARING represents people coming together in love and peace. Stainless steel figures represent the mother and child celebrating life. The figures support the heart made of multi-colored warm and cool dichroic glass. The 12H’ x 10L’ x 10W’ sculpture is mounted on an 18″ H x 12′ diam base, that serves as informal seating.
Goals
Our goal is to create a public art landmark and memorial that provides healing by instilling in viewers a sense of joy, identity and connection to each other and Broward Health.
Process
The project's sculpture and landscape design was a close collaboration between artists Stephen Canneto, Judith Spater, the Hospital's team lead by CEO Jared Simth and family members who had lost their children in the Parkland Florida High School shooting.
Additional Information
The sculpture's dedication text reads: The Spirit of Caring commemorates the seventeen precious lives lost, the survivors, our community and all who were affected by the shooting on February 14, 2018, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
