Overview

Infinite Bridge was inspired over New York City as we lifted off from Laguardia and flew at just the right altitude west along the length of the Queensboro Bridge. I’d been thinking about the uroboros seatbelt that the flight attendant had just used in the safety demonstration, and with the lengthy bridge stretched out at the perfect scale below me I imagined scooping it up and buckling it end-to end into an existentially self-negating symbolic object.

Goals

This was an adaptation to existing architecture on a university campus, situated inside an arcade arch flanking the art department.

Process

My point of contact was the art department chair. All fabrication, transportation, and installation was completed by the artist.

Additional Information

This project reflects my interest in the intersecting poetry of images in everyday life. From an airplane seatbelt, to a malleable bridge, to a rosette window the work progressed from the mundane, to whimsical, to sacred and meditative. The implied journey on a cyclical surface suggests both meaningless toil and a transcendent journey.
