Overview

Site intervention in Miami. An empty hotel that became reactivated at the end of 2020 during quarantine, to be viewed both from the busy street through the windows, and the inside, offering different perspectives between night and daytime. The installation is ephemeral like we are, it is evolving like we are, it has specific needs as we do, it speaks diversely and connects to others differently depending on their point of view.

This project was curated by Nuria Richards as part of the programming CLANDESTINA Miami.

Goals

The exhibition VISION ACUITY is titled after a term homonymous with 20/20 vision, indicating sharpness of vision at a certain distance. The concept is being summoned through curatorial inflection for the purpose of inviting the viewers to rethink topics such as identity, memory, and sense of time and space in a year that has become a reference for contemporary history.

The exhibitions focus on presenting a body of work in which the artist allows the reading of a conceptual progression of his/her work through a selection of pieces that better incorporate the sources of that process.

Using a private and domestic space allows its audience to interact with the works in a structure that transfers the dynamic of the artist's studio and filters the commercial noise.  The structure of the shows depends heavily on artists’ proposals and the integration of their work within the architecture as an active space.

Process

The approach for this installation is an intuitive ¨mise en place¨ of very varied elements into space and taking into account how these elements can also enhance the outdoor space adjacent to the building.

When art inhabits the public space there is a great element of accessibility that amplifies its power. Monika conceives a world surrounded by art, by creating enveloping and mesmerizing experiences. Evoking a sense of presence that makes the viewer reconnect to their own narrative, and memories, as well as with the location’s history and geography. The act of observing allows for a deeper connection to oneself which in turn leads to compassion and empathy for others.

Additional Information

MONIKA BRAVO
I am a multi-disciplinary artist born in Bogotá, Colombia. I studied fashion design in Rome & Paris and photography in London and NYC. I moved to Miami Beach, in 2020. I embody my own perspective and no longer seek “truth”; my vision is a synthesis of all disciplines, guiding me to manifest a reality that matches my desire to evolve. I create mesmerizing environments for public spaces, intimate interpersonal interactions through astrological readings, and meaningful spaces for individual and communal development through talks and workshops. I enjoy directing and producing diverse projects, from complex multi-media installations and public art commissions to artists’ books, textile design, and community workshops – thus, I see no boundaries between the applied and fine arts. I thrive in situations where I am working with limitations and constraints, creating opportunities for innovative projects that serve communities for years to come. I enjoy challenging myself with new technologies and materials, discovering new ways of manifesting my ideas to fit the needs of the location.
