Overview

Standing at 14 feet tall, this stainless steel casting by artist Philip Grausman embodies the essence of the Women’s Face, a theme for which the artist is widely recognized. Commissioned by Crosby Coughlin Fine Art for installation on the McNay Art Museum grounds, this monumental sculpture captures attention with its captivating forms. Utilizing a fiberglass mold and meticulous finishing techniques, including sanding with 220 grit and hand padding, the sculpture radiates elegance and sophistication. Collaborating closely with ART Research, the artist ensured that his vision was faithfully realized, resulting in a breathtaking piece that adds a touch of beauty to its surroundings.

Goals

The artist was commissioned by Crosby Coughlin Fine Art to produce this monumental sculpture for the McNay Art Museum grounds because of the focus on the essential elements of the Women's Face that the artist is known for. The artist collaborated with ART Research to make sure his vision and forms were done correctly.

Process

The artist supplied ART Research with a fiberglass mold. A wax was pulled and a wooden interior structure was produced to support the wax. The entire 14' wax bust was assembled and approved by the artist before cutting for the casting process. This was done to ensure form details. After casting the sections in 316L SS, ART welded the sections together and chased the surface to a 220 grit finish with hand pad. The sculpture was then approved by artist again and final pacification and cleaning was performed. The sculpture was then waxed and buffed.
