Overview
Vélocité is a 12 foot sculpture made of half inch aluminum and composed of 5 interlocking sprockets. The largest sprocket measures 8 feet in diameter.
Goals
The client requested a cycling themed sculpture that would be eye-catching, contemporary, and pay tribute to the avid cycling community of Greenville, S.C. The location of the sculpture is close to the Swamp Rabbit Trail which is an extensive multi-use greenway system.
Process
In creating the sculpture, the Artist worked closely with the fabrication shop from initial drawing stage, maquette building, water jet cutting, to actual fabrication of the piece. The process from initial contact to unveiling took overr two years with close communication with the client and the Art in Public Places due to Department of Transportation sight line issues.
