Overview

The Vancouver Airport Authority has for many years been a world-leader in believing that the integration of art into its terminals will create a unique and distinctive “sense of place”. This approach to art as an integral part of the passenger experience began the 1990’s with the design of the International Terminal, led by Stanis Smith as Project Architect while employed at Architectura in Vancouver (Architectura was subsequently acquired by Stantec). This project, over 1 million sq ft in size, has been recognized as one of the finest examples of integrated art and architecture in the airport industry. The art celebrates the indigenous cultures and natural beauty of the region, has been strategically located to help with intuitive placemaking and wayfinding, and creates a serene and calming environment for the millions of travellers who pass through the airport every year. As a result the airport continues to recognized around with world with numerous awards and top rankings in passenger satisfaction.

Goals

To create a unique and distinctive sense of place, to celebrate the indigenous cultures and natural beauty of the region, and to make art part of the placemaking and wayfinding strategy throughout the airport terminal.

Process

The art program was an integral part of the architectural design. Art has been located at key decision points in order to create "meet you at" places, and to help passengers navigate their way through the airport terminal.
