Overview

The call for artists was issued to submit proposals for a suspended work of art from the vaulted ceilings of the newly remodeled Vail Village Welcome Center. The work was to provide a 10 foot clearance from the floor over the central information desk of the Welcome Center. The trusses in the vaulted ceiling measured 24 feet from the floor and the weight was not to exceed 600 pounds.

Goals

The direction given in the request for proposals was for a unique site-specific work to be suspended from a vaulted ceiling above the central information desk of the Welcome Center. The commissioned public art will enhance this highly visible civic building which is a major public amenity for the guests and residents of Vail.The space has a natural mountain aesthetic with mixed rustic wood finishes and clean lines and for many is a first impression to the community.

Process

The call for artists was issued for site-specific proposals for the specific space in which the art would be suspended. Upon selection of the proposal by the Art in Public Places Board for the Town of Vail, the artist Paul Vexler worked with the town's Facilities Manager and Art in Public Places Coordinator for the specific requirements of the space for the art installation.

Additional Information

The lightweight (approximately 75 pound) sculptural work Red Eddy by Paul Vexler enriches the Vail Village Welcome Center on many levels. Its dynamic form fills the space with its undulating shape. The vibrant color selected for the work creates a dramatic contrast to the natural materials while also being complementary.
