Overview

Torkwase Dyson’s multimedia sculptural installation, “A Liquid Belonging” is a stunning presentation of 2D and 3D multimedia works and the artist’s first solo exhibition at Pace Gallery. New Project was engaged by the artist to provide design engineering and art fabrication services for Liveness (Multi-Scalar Motion #1) (2022). Conceived by the artist specifically for the first floor gallery space, the realization of the monumental, site-specific sculptural installation required a highly collaborative process. The precise engineering and refinement of the precambered steel components create subtle gradations and when integrated into the graphite structures, a seemingly effortless effect of shifting weights, textures, and forms.

Goals

Torkwase Dyson’s work draws attention to the viewers’ experience of space with the goal of inspiring liveness and recognition of multisensory belonging. Her artworks are informed by her personal diving practices, formative experiences living near waterways, and her extensive research surrounding relationships between environmental liberation, structural violence, and bodies of water. Through the utilization of abstract forms and multimedia, this work creates a unique experience for each individual. The angularity of the 13-foot-high wood forms varying in length and depth and the cantilevered steel forms encourages both close-up engagement and cautious navigation in viewing.
