Overview
Griffins originally perched on the corners of the Carnegie Library overlooking Scott Avenue in Tucson. They were removed in the renovation of 1938 but one escaped. You can see his footprints where he jumped to the sidewalk and walked away. This sculpture includes incredibly bright red LEDs at the Griffin’s heart. These light the sculpture at night and cast the sharp outlines of his ribs on the buildings and sidewalks nearby.
Goals
The goal of Toby is to create a nighttime/daytime presence. The sculpture's lights and sharp outlines of his ribs illuminate the buildings and sidewalks nearby in order to catch visitor's attention.
Process
Toby was a collaboration between Joe O'Connell and Creative Machines.
