Overview
Located in the lobby of The Rafter Apartments – a 26-story premier apartment building in the popular North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis, The Rafter Sculpture Wall is made of one inch, 16 gauge square tubular steel finished with a black patina. Measuring 9.5’ high x 15’ long x 4″ deep, the artwork provides a unique, industrial-chic statement within the space.
Goals
The goals of the project were to provide an artistic element between the residential lobby and the commercial space that defined each space yet allowed lines of sight and light through the structure. Additionally, it was an opportunity to reinforce the overall project brand through use of the logo and materials and finishes that spoke to the nature of the neighborhood.
Process
The collaboration process involved many partners: The building owners and managers, the construction managers, the architects, and the interior design group. After receiving input from each of these team members, my design and fabrication partner and I created the final design, fabricated the sculpture off-site, and installed the artwork prior to the building's grand opening.
