Overview
From the very beginning six million years or more ago, our earliest ancestors would migrate following valleys and river-courses.
Water has shaped our society and our survival; our myths and legends. It runs through our communities, connecting our past,
present and future; a constant reminder of the stories that we share. The Living Fraser River is a gleaming river of stainless
steel with surfaces full of rippling waves. Luminous and ever-changing under the passing days and seasons, the sculpture
acts as gateway to the Recreation Center; reminding us of the journey we have taken in making this place our home, and of
the connections that we share: with each other, and with the Fraser River as it brings life coursing into the heart of the city.
Stainless steel. 590 x 120 x 120 cm. $65,000.00 / Fraser Heights Recreation Center, City of Surrey, 2023.
Goals
The goals of this sculpture were to create a unique and stunning entry to the Fraser Heights Rec Center, and a place of transition within the fabric of the City of Surrey; a homage to its flowing water and ecological richness. A sculpture that connects sky and earth and shimmers at the entrance to the center, in delicate balance with its landscape and surrounds.
