Overview
On behalf of the Faculty of Law visual artist Barbara Broekman has designed three key artworks for the new faculty building in Amsterdam. In the Atrium are two monumental works of art; the Judiciary, a tapestry covering 7 floors (30 x 4,5 m) and Lady Justice (7 x 4,5 m). For the boardroom Broekman choose a carpet with a detail of the Judiciary.
Goals
To represent the judiciary Broekman uses two sources; first, the development of law as shown in Western painting. In addition Broekman uses mythological and biblical stories that show the struggle between good and evil. With the use of strong and provocative imagery she hopes to stimulate students to reflect on the relation between modern science and tradition.
Process
During every commission Broekman thoroughly researches the world of her client. She absorbes the wishes of the various parties: the users, the architect and the client. With her unique design she creates a dazzling work that mesmerizes the students and staff.
‘It adds delight to the daily journey of students and staff’, says architect Simon Allford of AHMM. ‘The artwork and the building share the space with the principle vertical circulation through the building, making it available to be viewed and enjoyed at all floor levels’. By request of the dean of the law department, a group of master students will develop an iconographic overview of the figures represented in the works.
