Overview
Made from steel and CNC cut, 3/4″ marine grade, sign industry standard MDO board (Medium Density Overlay), with designs dire toy printed onto the surface using UV inks from a large format flatbed printer and a final protective acrylic sealer applied overtop, the Feather Spiral adds a sturdy and welcome flash of color to the entrance to the Mall at Prince Georges in Hyattsville, MD, suburb of Washington DC, reminiscent of a stained glass cathedral.
Goals
The goals of this assignment from the mall construction company client PREIT, was to add a vibrant public art feature to the gateway entrance.
Process
The collaboration process for this project was a fairly simple one. After reviewing my existing work and presenting a budget framework for me to work in, the stakeholders asked me to create a grouping of seven single sculptures that would fit in a 10' x 10' square area.
I offered two different options and allowed them to choose their favorite.
I also collaborated with the engineering firm SGH, (Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger), and with the PREIT construction crew when pouring the concrete slab so I could embed the installation bolts into the wet concrete using a pre cut template for positioning.
Additional Information
The opportunity for this project came about because the stakeholders saw and liked another public sculpture piece I had completed in the Hyattsville area.
