Overview
Four painted banners, acrylic on theatrical backdrop muslin, 8 x 8 feet, hung by rods in top and bottom pockets.
Goals
This project added an big visual presence to the strong female deities of India and China. The conference was an overwhelming week of presentations, concerts, exhibitions and field trips, and it was very important to have an artistic component to engage the visual senses and a visualization of what was being discussed.
Process
I applied to the Parliament and was accepted. When I brought them to the conference hall ( a huge place in Toronto) the design team had them hung (by professional riggers) in this wonderful spot full of light.
Additional Information
It was delightful to get a lot of positive feedback from Hindus who were thrilled that I (a non-HIndu) had painted their deities. In this day of worries over cultural appropriation, that was a relief.
