Overview
The City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the Public Works Department and the Las Vegas Arts Commission commissioned the construction of four site-specific sculptures located within Symphony Park. An independent evaluation committee selected the work of Barbara and Larry Domsky based on artistic excellence through the quality of past work and qualifications of the artist team. Barbara and Larry Domsky designed, fabricated and installed Larger than Life, an iconic art installation. Uncomplicated in design, playful in its nature, to be explored by all ages and universally understood by all nationalities. Four brightly colored, three dimensional symbolic sculptures fabricated in steel; a treble clef, a pair of eighth notes and a quarter note. The artwork invites the audience to meander through the space. At ten feet tall, the grand scale can easily be seen from a distance, signifying a landmark, drawing people in and inviting them to stay, take photographs, or socialize in the space.
Goals
The goal of the City of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs is to provide the community with meaningful art experiences. Larger than Life by Barbara and Larry Domsky was installed directly across the street from the Discovery Children's Museum and near The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The large scale brightly colored steel musical notes connect with the site and celebrate the arts.
Process
A request for Statements of Qualifications (RSOQ) was issued on February 7, 2019 and advertised on the city and Arts Commission websites, a local news publication, and Nevada Gov eMarketplace (NGEM). On September 17, 2019 after multiple meetings and a public presentation from the top three semi-finalists, the evaluation committee selected the work of Barbara and Larry Domsky. Domsky Glass Studio, located in Las Vegas, NV, is dedicated to the creative process of artistic glass and metal. In 1994 Barbara and Larry Domsky opened their first studio to the public and have remained committed to creating original works of art and unique lighting solutions.
