Overview
The artwork benches exist in a symbiotic relationship at the entrance to the Texas Tech medical Center. Etched into the 1st bench is a pattern of flowing water. This bench hosts a 2’ hemisphere at its center. Etched into the 2nd bench is a design based on the lotus, a plant that grows in standing water. At its center is a 2’ bowl. The benches sit adjacent to one another linked physically (the image of water and the lotus as well as the hemisphere fitting into the bowl) and conceptually, the design echoes the relationship between patient and caregiver.
Goals
The goal of the project was to create a work of art that served as a benches which addressed the mission of the Texas Tech Medical Center.
Process
Originally designed to be part of a garden walkway, the medical center decided before the was installed, to expand over the garden and a new site had to be found for the artwork. The site chosen was by the entrance to the medical center where patrons and employees would often sit as they waited for their transportation to arrive.
