Overview

One of the most extensive veteran’s sculptures ever, this series of stars honors veterans by featuring their own words. This piece includes over 100 quotes drawn from interviews I conducted with a wide range of veterans, first responders and front-line medical personnel. These stars are central components of the Stars and Stripes Park, for which we designed many additional art pieces. This piece is complete and will be installed later this year.

Goals

We wanted to honor the lives, words and experiences of veterans by featuring their direct quotes in monumental form. From a distance, we wanted the monumental stars, stripes and other sculptural elements we designed for this park a celebratory environment. But up close, we wanted the quotes and the overlapping light projections to create a more intimate atmosphere consistent with the intensity and wisdom of the quotes.

Process

This artpiece is the result of scores of interviews with veterans, first responders and front-line medical personnel over approximately six months. I did a mix of in-person and remote interviews. Some were conducted in small groups and others interviewed individually.
