Overview

Resembling two halves of a seed cupping a central space in the plaza of the new Indian Creek Library, this 9ft. diameter by 12ft. 6in. immersive sculpture helps welcome visitors to the library and holds close the city’s intention of growing the next generation of residents and guiding them toward a beautiful future. The construction methodology for the Olathe Seed is one of a series of expressed folded parts, bolted or welded together to create the whole object, a reflection of the different activities and spaces inside the building that come together under one roof to become the Indian Creek Library. Metal, finished in two very distinct ways, highlights the rough, protective exterior of the elm seed versus the bright potential for a new tree inside, as well as a way to complement the metal façade of the library itself.

Goals

The City’s goal for the Indian Creek Library entry plaza was to incorporate an artwork that had a year-round visual impact, while taking into consideration the design of the new library and its exterior cladding materials (metal and glass), and integrating into the planned landscaping for the surrounding site. The library is a combination meeting place, maker space, and knowledge center, that emerged from Olathe's "future ready" concept - 'Seed' helps to capture what is happening inside the library as a space that will help grow and expand Olathe's talents for the future, and translates this into a sculptural form outside in the front.
