Overview
Sculptural assemblage with theme of celebration and birth: a child nested safely as it appears to be either emerging from a cocoon, born from a seed, swaddled by Mother Nature. Protected and observed by two guardian birds who comfortably alight upon the peaceful child as if it were simply natural to do so. The sculpture is paired with artwork from the client's collection: “Datura” (above the sculpture). Sculpture: 36″Lx12″Hx18″H
Goals
The objective was to find an appropriate yet unexpected companion statement to what might often be considered a prosaic garden theme of flora and fauna: The artist's intention has been to examine the human-ness of Nature and "humanity" through anthropomorphic metaphor, thus bringing a new light to "norms" and making "real" the surreal.
Process
The artist, John Carroll Long is solely responsible for the sculptural artwork. Placement of the sculpture with the painted artwork above was guided by the client's architect, Andrea Clark Brown. It is a simple installation, with the intent to make a meaningful and strong pairing of very disparate artworks.
