Overview
The new University of Nebraska Medical Center at Kearney asked me to design a hanging sculpture that related to the Platte River, which runs near the campus. The sculpture is 65 feet long, and from the outside, the silhouette of the sculpture follows the path of the Platte River on a map as it traverses the state.
Goals
The space for the sculpture, which is above a student meeting area, is long and narrow. The sculpture had to gracefully fit into this space while not feeling like something heavy overhead. The work had to have openness. It needed to counteract the right angles of the space with curves, and it needed to provide much-needed color to the space.
Process
The University of Nebraska was an ideal client. The only additional collaboration was in regards to the installation process. My installation team worked very well with the university's staff.
