The water feature “Resignal” was developed as an expression of the core work at Maxim Integrated. This semiconductor company specializes in translating analog signals into digital signals and back to analog. Maxim’s custom designed semiconductor chips are found in thousands of devices including the world’s leading smartphones, audio/visual equipment, environmental controls and sound systems. Located at the center of a corporate campus, this fountain is the focal point of the main outdoor courtyard. Night and day, the sculpture radiates a deep blue light from the hand painted glass. In contrast, concentric dichroic glass rings reflect a specular golden light.
Integration of the sculptural water feature was key to the success of the central courtyard at the corporate campus. At the end of a 200' axial site line, "Resignal" visually connects the far end of the campus with the main entrance. To the east of "Resignal" is a trellis covered outdoor seating area. The trellis design was inspired by the shape of Maxim's integrated circuits which informed the direction of "Resignal". Maxim's silicone chips inspired the blue painted background of the water wall while the concentric rings suggest the "analog" aspect of Maxim's products.
The landscape architect, Paul Reed, and the building architects, Corgan Associates, provided me with the location of the water walls. They also specified the general height and shape of the water walls. Once the water wall shapes were established, I interviewed senior staff at Maxim and investigated their work. All parties were very willing to allow me to create the concept and develop the materials for "Resignal".
Overall, the water wall installation measures 44’-8” wide x 8’-0” tall x 12” deep. The principal materials are stainless steel, painted low-iron glass, dichroic glass & water.
