Overview
Site-specific steel sculpture commission for a private collector's beach residence. Client wanted a low-maintenance, seven-foot tall freestanding work that could withstand beachfront winds.
Goals
The sculpture was created to memorialize the former life of the property, which served as the first integrated summer camp for girls in the state of Mississippi, Camp Onward. The piece needed to feel transcendent and uplifting, and formally included relationships that suggested play and upward movement.
Process
The client and I walked the property, I asked some personal questions to understand what the intention and overall message of the work needed to be, and where the work was going to be installed. I created a few models, and we discussed them. I accepted some feedback about the color of the work (the client chose white), and about making the work fit into the designated area.
