Overview
Addressing both Pediatrics and Mother/Baby wings of Providence St.Vincent Medical Center, SitePainters (team of Laura Bender and John Early) proposed and fabricated art for the lobby, conference rooms, and corridors. Drawing from nature’s inspiration, a suite of paintings on wood panels were created for the visitor lounge and check-in desk. Site Painters established a color identity for the two departments which share the same floor, helping with way-finding. Painted wood cut-outs of animals were integrated into the Pediatric hallways and painted wood panels of flowering plants completed the installation in the Mother/Baby corridors.
Goals
The staff was looking for custom artworks of serenity and beauty worthy of the sacred occasion of birth for the Mother/Baby department and playful distraction for children in the Pediatrics wing. Using a similar format of overlapping colored rectangles for the two different departments established cohesion while also providing distinguishing color schemes and themes of nature (the plant world for Mother/Baby and the animal kingdom for Pediatrics). The overriding goal was a celebration of life, welcoming and nurturing for patients, families, and staff.
Process
Site Painters met with the nursing staff to learn of their concerns and goals. Much research went into the proposal. After approval of the written proposal, Site Painters began the design phase. A color design for all proposed areas was submitted and approved. The fabrication and installation was completed and has received warm response from staff and visitors.
