Overview

Pillbug is a mashup of a ’74VW Super Beetle and the humble Roly Poly-aka Pillbug. I wanted to create a bus shelter that would entertain and inspire occupants and the drivers passing by. Inside, the chassis of the Beetle and original seat undercarriage create a booth-the insect scales overhead become a tiny cathedral. Created out of the recycled vw, mild steel, stainless steel and epoxy paint. 10 ft x 16 ft x 8 ft.

Goals

Creating an interesting and functional art bus shelter

Process

I sawzalled the beetle to create the upper and lower portions of the form. They were then attached to the 3 inch spinal pipe and cross braces. The scales bridge the gap in between the 2 car elements and form the canopy. Upcycled truck wheels create faux steel tires and the antennae were the original headlight housings.
