Overview
Exhibit is inside City Hall, utilizing a suspension system of existing poles and additional wiring. Photo exhibit uses track and cabling system. 26 Kites displayed in an area of about 650 Sq feet and stairwell in atrium area.
Goals
The kites and photos in the exhibit are not commissioned, they are donated for display by the family of Tyrus Wong. The goal for the display was to allow for people to see the handmade kites of Tyrus but keep them safe from damage. They are extremely fragile. The photographs support the kites because they follow the artist while he flew them at the beach and it gives a deeper insight to who Tyrus Wong was.
Process
The photographer had already worked with the Wong family when they did an exhibit at the Walt Disney Museum so a few items were applied to this exhibit also. The family worked with City staff and also an Arts Commissioner on curation and layout for the exhibit. Several meetings took place prior to the installation. All team members worked very well on this project.
Additional Information
The City of Malibu continues to be able to create amazing public art displays inside of the highly used, public City Hall building. Having the ability to exhibit Tyrus Wong is an honor and we think our City is very lucky to have access to such amazing artists.
