Overview
Beautifully functional sculpted steel oak tree gates protect this orchard from unwanted critters. These 10′ wide x 9′ tall gates provide a dramatic addition to the client’s beautifully landscaped property. Forged and fabricated COR-TEN and mild steel sheet give two slightly different rust finishes to the tree trunk and leaves. The shaped leaves and bark give the tree depth. Stainless steel reeds provide contrasting color and texture and keep out small animals. The locking gate handle is forged to look like a broken stick.
Goals
The clients wanted to replace aging, sagging, shabby wooden gates with something to complement the landscaping and art work on their property. The gates are now a focal point of the backyard.
Process
The clients had some ideas they presented me with. The existing solid wood gates did not work well and blocked any view into the orchard. We discussed their desire for a design that reflected their love of gardening, nature and art. I developed several design sketches and then refined their chosen design.
