Overview
This large scale silk, tapestry-like wall hanging was commissioned for the largest wall in a small, contemporary chapel used primarily for musical events.
It is 20 feet wide, 11 feet tall, and about 5 inches deep, an appliqué and reverse-appliqué construction done in a color palette that compliments architectural features in the space. The impressionistic reflected sunrise imagery provides an uplifting sense of rebirth and renewal.
Goals
An important benefit of the large scale and deeply textured collage of layered, twisted, looped and gathered silks is the much needed acoustic dampening it provides in a large architectural space of hard, smooth surfaces. The rich color, texture, and composition created in our unique process with our lustrous, iridescent silks was intended to achieve a warm, peaceful, comforting , and intimate visual experience.
The title, On Earth As In Heaven, was chosen by the client to relate our reflected sunrise imagery to liturgical text.
Process
The artist team collaborated with the art committee at Normandale Lutheran on concept, imagery, scale, composition, design, and color palette.
Museum Services was hired to do the installation.
