Overview
WOWHAUS invented a “ceramic lenticular” technique in which 2 hand-glazed ceramic tile images are installed on single corrugated substrate. Four 10' x 10' x 3″ murals invite interaction, animating and interpenetrating as viewers pass by. Textiles representative of the cultural diversity of Oakland merge, creating new compositions that evoke the cultural fusion of the city.
Goals
Goal was to create engaging, highly durable artwork that speaks to the unique character of Oakland while activating a large, blank wall opposite the Amtrak station. Artwork engages viewers passing by on train, in vehicles and on foot.
Process
WOWHAUS engaged community members who contributed textiles and participated in glazing a portion of the tiles.
