Overview
Norman Mooney’s sculpture, Windseed No.3 made its debut in China at Guangdong Nanhai Art Field, on view from Nov. 18th, 2022 to Feb. 19th, 2023.
Based in Nanhai, Foshan, a southeastern town of China, Nanhai Art Field is an ecological art compound that embraces indigenous scenes of Xiqiao Mountain and its surrounding small lakes, villages, and local markets. It celebrates field art, eco-awareness and multiversity of local lifestyles with 134 artists, architects, musicians, dancers, designers, and city planners from 15 countries, including MAD Architect (China), Sou Fujimoto (Japan), Liu Jianhua (China), and James Tapscott (Australia), and Norman Mooney (USA).
Goals
Windseed No. 3 was integral to the design strategy of the Nanhai project, aiming to establish a dialogue between natural and artificial elements, mathematics and art. The sculpture, Windseed no.3 was created by artist Mooney using stainless steel. It rises above Tingyin Lake with its starburst geometry and angular spikes jutting out from a convex polyhedron, casting soft shadows on the water to highlight the subliminal beauty of natural structures. The sculpture offer a unique opportunity for the audience to contemplate the relationship between the natural world and human-made structures. They also demonstrate the importance of incorporating art into public spaces to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of the environment. The sculptures will remain on display in Nanhai after the festival as a lasting legacy of the integration of art and design.
