Overview

Gordon Huether’s 9/11 Memorial measures approximately 23’ H x 25’ D. The memorial was created from salvaged steel beams from the World Trade Center and custom designed glass panels, laminated with printed vinyl inner layers, listing the names of the victims. This project was a community effort – It was made possible by Huether, who donated materials and staff time in collaboration with landscape architect Gretchen Stranzl McCann and the City & community of Napa.

Goals

In October of 2009 the City of Napa’s Fire Department was contacted by the September 11th Families Association and given the opportunity to receive pieces of World Trade Center steel recovered from the site after the tragedy that claimed 2,973 innocent lives on September 11, 2001. The Fire Department was humbled and proud to be given such an offer and started scouting out a team of Napa locals to make this memorial come together. This monument was dedicated on September 11, 2013.

Process

In a public-private collaboration, artist Gordon Huether was asked to design this monumental memorial, becoming the focal point of the 9/11 Memorial Garden. Constructed from the recovered remnants of the World Trade Center, the Napa 9/11 Memorial honors the victims of terrorism and all who risk their lives to save others. This place of reflection is meant to inspire us to continue to express the courage, caring and compassion our world experienced that day.

Additional Information

The community of Napa acquired 30 tons of steel - pieces of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, after the Port announced it would offer steel artifacts to any non-profit entity worldwide, interested in creating September 11th memorials.
