Overview
Beacon-like monumental light sculptures that illuminate the sky and unite the cities of Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego throughout the winter months. Each star spans 20 feet in diameter and contains over 30,000 individually programmable LED lights that illuminate and oscillate in rhythmic patterns visible from miles away.
Goals
"In fostering the sublime power of art within our communities, The Kilroy Star’s inaugural debut is a unique reflection of its place and time. Now more than ever, we need avenues that inspire, and in a post-pandemic world, the role of public art will be even more important."

Process
Kilroy Realty commissioned Sean Orlando of Engineered Artworks, in collaboration with Zoetic Digital, to create and install these monumental interactive light sculptures on four high-visibility West Coast properties. Custom support tripods and inner steel cores make the 12-point stars possible, but the project’s true challenge was installing and attaching the sculptures to four unique buildings using a combination of mechanical maneuvering and individualized structural solutions.
