Overview

Mosaic decoration, 1.5'x50', surrounding the central fountain at University Towne Centre in La Jolla, California composed of traditional Italian smalti glass, including embedded gold foil in glass.

Goals

The fountain is a celebration of Kate Sessions, a botanist, horticulturalist and landscape architect who strongly influenced the landscape design of gardens in the San Diego area. Featured are some of the signature plants Kate Sessions used in her designs, including flora she imported from around the world, as well as California native plants she promoted for use in gardens.

Process

TrizecHahn Corporation commissioned the fountain as part of a remodel of the regional shopping center in 1996. Artist, Tracy Sabin, researched and developed the decoration which surrounds the outside ring of the fountain and worked closely with master mosaicist, Stephen Miotto, with manufacturing facilities in New York and outside Venice, Italy.

Additional Information

Mosaic design and supervision by Tracy Sabin. Construction and installation of the mosaic by Miotto Mosaics.
