Overview
Develop an integration of sculpture and handrails for the University of Kentucky Singletary Center concert hall. stainless steel.
Goals
ADA compliance on handrails came as a retrofit many years after construction, and the Center Director saw the opportunity to change the plain appearance of this concert hall to something more fitting of the international stars and artists who perform there.
Process
The design concept was accepted immediately, but the development of the final installation required minor alterations throughout the process, due to the unusual dynamics of the hall's winding stairways and sloping walls. The consulting engineer, Peyman Jahed, was instrumental in helping me understand the needs of the structure and planning methods for working in it. The University staff also were terrific support.
Additional Information
Since then, I have heard from people who have traveled the world and not seen a concert hall comparable. Our work produced an intervention that made the facility much more unique as well as more accessible.
