Overview
This mural was created as part of The Kroger Co.'s art program, which commissions artwork for new Kroger stores from local artist around the country. Mural dimensions are 12.5 feet wide by 5 feet high. It's painted on archival quality Ampersand gessobord panels with acrylic paints.
Goals
The goal of artwork was to use local references to evoke a creative, uplifting feeling that 1) encourages community and 2) celebrates the spirit of the neighborhood. The artwork had to be safe, durable and of appropriate imagery for view by the public realm. Kroger's goal is to provide customers with an outstanding shopping experience that is Fresh and Friendly, while promoting Hospitality, Value, Convenience and Simplicity. These are the fundamental building blocks that they hope will inspire their customers to feel Proud, Rewarded, Appreciated, and Confident, and to know they are cared for. These values had to be reflected in the mural.
Process
Houston Arts Alliance is coordinating this project for Houston area stores. After submitting an RFQ, Ksenia Annis was selected as one of the three finalists, who received an RFP. She submitted two sketches and was selected as the artist for Kroger #121 Katy TX mural. The client liked both sketches, but wanted to combine elements from both into one design. Ksenia prepared a final sketch, which was approved after some additional minor comments, and full-size mural was executed.
Additional Information
The mural’s central theme is celebration of family life in the Katy community. Historic architecture and lovingly preserved landmarks serve as a backdrop for a depiction of daily life of Katy residents. The beauty of the natural world serves as a portal into the scene framing it with wild flowers and grasses.
