Overview

Patterns incorporated in the mural reference those found in traditional parquet flooring. My interest in this subject matter exists in exploring the tensions between high and low, and private and public space. The title, “I’m So Happy You’re Here,” reflects the serendipitous discovery of the work by passersby- commuters, park visitors, and neighbors – who experience bright patterns underfoot, calling for their celebration of the present moment.

Goals

Traditionally found in homes of the wealthy, elaborate parquet floors are a symbol of status and importance. By recontextualizing these patterns in a mural format, in a public space, I am challenging notions of value and accessibility. This location is a hub for transportation. By referencing patterns traditionally found in the home, the mural will bridge the gap between origin and destination. It questions notions of possession of space, making this a place for everyone.

Process

I’m So Happy You’re Here was created with support from New York City Department of Parks in Recreation and UNIQLO. The project was commissioned through the 2018 UNIQLO Park Expressions program for emerging artists.
