Overview

Free-standing glass screens were created for the garden of the Respite at The Emmanuel Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR. Fernanda d’Agostino created laminated safety glass units with warm colors and images of nature which blend into the garden environment. Five glass screens in various sizes have a total of 105 sq. ft.

Goals

The glass screens were designed to provide comfort to the children and bring solace to their families while simultaneously creating privacy in the garden. The warm amber colors embrace visitors of all ages. Images of plants, birds, and butterflies bring an additional calming effect and deliver another message, one that is for each spectator’s personal interpretation.

Process

The privacy screens are laminated safety glass units comprised of two tempered glass panels. Images of plant, birds, and butterflies were screen-printed with vitreous enamels on different layers of the glass and fired. Translucent amber enamels were spray-painted with the airbrushing technique on another layer and fired.

Additional Information

The screens can be viewed from different angles and distances and change their appearance depending on the time of day and weather pattern. Fernanda d';Agostino has addressed the challenge of creating a place with her artwork to be experienced by children and their families.
