Overview
Located in the heart of Gunnison, Colorado – a small mountain town nestled in the Gunnison Valley, off highway 50, the Gunnison mural looms large over IOOF Park. The mural features 16 local plant species, 10 birds and mammal species, and 9 butterfly and bee species common to the Gunnison Valley. It also includes depictions of popular recreational actives in the area, as well as a nod to ever important ranching community in Gunnison.
In addition to the mural, the project included three fully 3D sculptures of wildflowers, including Silver Lupines, Mules Ear Sunflowers and Paintbrush Flowers sprinkled throughout the park as an extension.
Other features of the mural wall include 3D elements; each of the butterflies and bees are constructed of painted steel and stand off the wall in low relief, plus 4 plaques with QR codes that allow visitors to scan the codes and bring up webpages that tell about the different species in on the wall, along with activities to do in the Gunnison and Crested Butte areas.
