Oneida Figure Sculpture

This piece is a life-size bronze sculpture of an Oneida warrior backdropped by three bronze panels. The sculpture commemorates the historic Oneida Carrying Place. The two side panels were 91″h x 108″w x 5″d, while the single middle panel is 108″h x 92″w x 10″d. The figure itself is 76″h x 26″w x 18″d weighing at around 325 lbs.

The left panel, facing the sculpture, depicts a turtle, wolf, and bear, which represent the three Oneida clans.

The center panel depicts Oneida warriors and an Oneida leader. The Oneida leader standing in front of the panel, on the stone, is holding a two-row wampum. This belt symbolizes the agreement and conditions under which the Haudenosaunee welcomed the newcomers to this land.

The right panel depicts Oneidas carrying a boat, which represents how they would carry large boats and their cargo from the shore of the Mohawk River overland to be relaunched in Wood Creek, bridging the gap between the two waterways and linking together the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and their trading partners to the north and west.
