Overview
Wind + People Driven Interactive Art Experience
The Barnycz Group was engaged as the Grandscape project Experiential Design firm, they designed, developed, deployed and programmed all of Grandscape ‘s Electronic Amenities.
Towering over 35ft. tall, the Kaleidoscope is more than a guest attraction, it’s a piece of artwork. Danny Barnycz inspiration for the shape of the Kaleidoscope comes from the silhouette of a female Flamenco Dancer’s Dress turned upside down.
Made up of 432 custom fabricated triangular LED video tiles, 1,248 programmable LED globe lights and 46 LED wash lights, the Kaleidoscope is visually hard to miss on a trip Grandscape. Including an immersive 16-channel audio experience with a custom soundtrack along with different guest engagement features including a selfie camera and interactive kinetic motion content, the Kaleidoscope was designed to be an interactive experience.
The Barnycz Group created all of the video and audio content for the Kaleidoscope that include vibrant and colorful visuals as if you were viewing through the nostalgic optical toy of the same name to wind-generative shows designed to be influenced by the surrounding wind speeds captured by an anemometer mounted to the Kaleidoscope structure.
Goals
Grandscape will be one of the largest and most unique mixed-use real estate developments in the country upon final completion. Located in the Dallas, TX metropolitan area, the Grandscape project stretches over 400 acres and will feature more than 3.9 million square feet of retail, entertainment, residential, dining and attractions.
The vision of Grandscape has always been to create a world-class shopping center that is second to none. Along with other key points of differentiation including a unique and diversified tenant mix and the development of the physical environment, the guest experience was identified as a key brand identity pillar of the project. With the guest in-mind, Grandscape sought to create an experience truly unique in the mixed-use retail space.
Process
The Barnycz Group created all of the video and audio content for the Kaleidoscope that include vibrant and colorful visuals as if you were viewing through the nostalgic optical toy of the same name to wind-generative shows designed to be influenced by the surrounding wind speeds captured by an anemometer mounted to the Kaleidoscope structure.
Presented with numerous challenges along the way including custom structural fabrication, the development of a one-of-a-kind LED video tile hardware, experiential show development and a difficult site installation with various construction trades working on top of each other, the Kaleidoscope shifted from a dream to a reality.
The Kaleidoscope was completely assembled at an off-site facility for testing prior to being dismantled, shipped on flatbed trucks across the country and installed in its permanent home at Grandscape.
Additional Information
Since its installation, the Kaleidoscope continues to be a favorite and is the most photographed element at Grandscape across different social media platforms. From guests interacting with the selfie camera, dancing with the kinetic motion content or watching the wind-driven shows, the Kaleidoscope has become a truly exciting showcase feature at Grandscape.
