Overview

Laurentian Forest features the work of Ixchel Suarez, an international tapestry artist (originally from Mexico City). Weavers are the original mythological ‘Fates’, and the loom is a precursor to the modern computer. This installation references connections between Nature and Memory. In Laurentian Forest, Suarez explores through suspended fibre sculptures her experience as an immigrant of the Canadian landscape, particularly the changing seasons and colors which are vital to Canadian ecology.
The sculptures also explore connections between trees and forest forms, and the organic nature of our bodies, creating a visual woven tapestry of connections between humans and nature. Time, sounds, textures, video…all connected as one (forest). Music (soundscapes) composed and performed by International pianist/composer Dimitar Pentchev.
