Overview
“Galaxy S” Polished stainless and cor-ten steel spiral sculpture. An abstract S shape refers to the first letter in the name of the Stella Apartments. 12′ tall on a 3′ tall pedestal with multi-colored interior LED lighting.
Goals
The Stella apartment project has a "Stellar" themed interior, with astronomical and universe themed artwork. Andrea Fazendin is the art consultant who hired me, based on my past work, to design a standing sculpture in the plaza to match the decor of new apartment building, and deliver a distinguishing icon for the face of the project.
Process
The conceptual drawings were made with pencil and paper, and most of the details were worked out of a few months in the design portion of the initial job. I worked with the digital designer to create patterns for the laser cutter. Production time was 12 months for all the designing, shaping, polishing, welding, wiring, and installing.
Additional Information
Galaxy S has thousands of uniquely shaped mirror-polished surfaces, no repeats! - to represent the glimmering light in the universe, and add a distinctive attraction to the end of a long drive in front of the New Carrollton Metro Station and a highlight near the front doors of the new Stella Apartments. In a very orthogonal setting its continuous curves stand out, and the gestures of it reflect changing colors and lights of the cars, sky, and activity around it.
