Overview

El Dorado
2013
in-situ acrylic secco wall drawings, oil enamel on thermal blankets on canvas
34 x 60 feet
at “on painting” group exhibition at Centro Atlantico de Arte Moderno, Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, Spain

Goals

"on painting" was an international survey of contemporary painting. Curator and CAAM director Omar Pascual commissioned this mural from V-SU so as to highlight muralism, abstraction and site-specific intentions within contemporary painting practice. The artist integrated existing architectural geometries to create a matrix of his signature "vectors" on the facade of the CAAM.

Process

A year prior to working on site the CAAM petitioned and obtained permission form the Mayor's office for official approval to create a temporary artwork on the facade of a landmarked building. This kind of permission had never been granted before. Omar Pascual made several presentations about the artists ouvre as well as ensuring the historical preservation committee of Las Palmas that the artwork would not permanently alter the structural and aesthetic integrity of the centuries old building.

Additional Information

The entire composition was improvised on site over the course of 10 days with three assistants. Work time was 10 AM til 9 PM with regular breaks for meals.
