Overview
“Above and Beyond” is a 24″ x 27″ x 8″ sculpture made of cast bronze; The pedestal is concrete with cast stone cap.The Top of the pedestal has an inclination of 45 degrees.
Goals
The concept was to create a non war-specific sculpture to symbolize distinguished service. The sculpture is located at the entrance of the Park underneath the US flag. The sculpture was made to adorn the top of the memorial monument. Two plaques with the names of two war veterans are added to the bottom of the monument each year on Memorial Day.
Process
After the site visit, the artist presented an art concept to the committee in the form of a drawing. The art concept was approved unanimously. The artist then rendered the sculpture in clay and invited the committee to his studio for final approval. The sculpture was then taken to the foundry for casting. Meanwhile the artist worked with the landscape architect and the civil engineer and suggested modifications to the top of the pedestal to facilitate view. After casting the sculpture the artist provided a plot drawing to allow the cast stone company to locate the holes for the anchors of the Sculpture and two cast bronze plaques. The city engineer oversaw the installation.
Additional Information
The sculpture was extremely well received by the veteran community as well as the general public and has become an iconic part of the park. The sculpture can be seen from the street by walking as well as driving traffic.
