Overview
The artist was approached by one of his long-standing clients to commission artwork for his new hotel, the Daxton. Designed as a boutique hotel/gallery, bespoke artwork is discovered throughout the beautifully appointed building. Stephen’s splashy artwork is displayed at the back of the reception desk and at the elevator lobby of each of the four floors. The five paintings were part of the artist’s ‘Stop and Smell the Roses’ series. The reception painting (acrylic on canvas) is 120″ x 79″, while each of the elevator lobby paintings were 48″ x 96″ (acrylic on canvas with floating museum frame). These were accompanied by a 30″ x 60″ framed mirrors with matching splashy paint.
Goals
The client was interested in adorning each elevator lobby with a unique painting and accompanying long mirror with a complementary artistic frame. The artist incorporated two of the primary colors used in the bedroom suites into the paintings. Each painting uses a a subtly different color palette to invoke a different feeling on each floor.
Process
Embarking on this project, the artist worked on developing the color palette for each painting. Once determined complete, the artist shared photos of the work with the client for input. The frames for the mirrors, as idea inspired by the client, was a greater challenge- applying the right amount of paint to complement the movement in the associated painting.
