Overview
Anchored with an aluminum frame, Cloud Fountain has a height of 24 feet (with an additional three feet added by its base) and a diameter of 12 – 14 feet. The rippling effect of the aluminum tubing creates a kinetic experience for the viewer; as a driver or pedestrian passes by, the sculpture itself appears to moveDuring the day, the bars of aluminum will interact with the sun – creating patterns and shadows throughout the space. At night, multi-colored LEDs, installed within the work, illuminate the sculpture in a slowly shifting pattern of color.
Goals
A newly built aquatics center, serving as the focal point of the neighborhood of Elk Grove, was the inspiration for Cloud Fountain, along with fountains and splash pools in the surrounding areas. Gordon decided to explore the concept of water as central to the lives and experience of the Elk Grove community. Cloud Fountain is an abstract representation of this essential element.
