Overview
Windows for a small circular chapel built over the artesian spring that enabled these pioneering sisters to settle at this location in the mid-19th century. The spring is important both physically and spiritually to the community.
Goals
It was important to strike a balance between joy and quiet contemplation, while addressing the request to address the spring below and making the artwork part of the architecture.
Process
I worked closely with the Sisters and and the liturgical design consultant to make the design, then again with the fabricator to translate the painting into etched blown glass.
Additional Information
These were the first "painterly" stained glass windows made in the United States employing the acid etching of blown glass, then laminating the pieces together without using lead. They were a real challenge to make.
