Overview
For one of the world’s top hospitals, artstudio 1.0.1 commissioned me to create a 28 foot long diptych comprised of two 30” H x 168” W x 2.75″ D mixed media wall sculptures. Consisting of strips of stained and silvered glass and resin, the mosaic sculptures are mounted on intricately layered canvases of wood.
Goals
Referencing the natural beauty of the southwest, this project is inspired by the image of blue agave fields amidst mountain terrain and blue sky. The abstract design evokes the southwestern flora with its color palette, organic shape, and row-like composition. The lengthy diptych is intended to usher the outdoor world inside and its shimmery luminescence brings a welcoming tranquility to the expansive first floor entrance. Additionally, the blue agave concept echoes the property's beautiful desert landscaping and the abundance of succulent varieties that adorn the lobby walkway.
Process
After the initial concept was accepted, a physical 12" x 18" sample was presented and the project was green-lighted. Although approved, the client requested that the overall palette lean a bit lighter than depicted in the sample so as not to blend into the surrounding dark wood finishes. Layout photos were submitted throughout production to ensure that the client was pleased with the direction and color distribution. With a tight eight week long production schedule, the process included silvering of glass, fabricating the resin and glass into thin strips, edge sanding all pieces, and fusing them to the sculptural canvas. After being crated and shipped to Phoenix, the the diptych was installed on a metal track system.
