Overview
Beken, was commissioned for the new Alameda Waterfront Park, located on the historic Seaplane Lagoon where the China Clipper used to launch. The park, which features pedestrian pathways, cycle accommodations, recreational areas, and picnic tables situated above landscaped tiers, is the first phase of a larger redevelopment of the former 1,560-acre Alameda Naval Air Station. Beken marks the center of the park’s main axes, its tapering form taking its cues from lighthouses, channel buoys, and air control towers, creating a new landmark
Goals
The Alameda Point Site has been an under-utilized gathering place for regional tourists and locals since the decommissioning of the Naval Air Station in 1997. The City’s vision for the re-imagining of the site and the complex of facilities and range of use and audience proposed by the Alameda Point redevelopment creates an opportunity for a literal and figurative center, a hub around and through which visitors can orient themselves and gather. The Waterfront Park and Beken can serve as both a gateway and focal point for this vision, promoting new forms of civic engagement, recreation, resiliency, and promoting the quality of life in the community.
